HEALTH LITERACY: THE ROLE OF HEALTH EDUCATION

Health literacy refers to an individual’s ability to obtain, process, and understand essential health information in order to make appropriate decisions regarding their well-being. A high level of health literacy is associated with better health outcomes, greater adherence to treatments, and a reduction in hospitalizations.

Effective communication between doctors and patients is crucial to ensuring adherence to prescribed treatments. A patient’s ability to understand medical instructions and their trust in healthcare professionals significantly impact the effectiveness of therapies. Studies have shown that low health literacy can lead to poor adherence to treatments, increasing the risk of complications and hospital admissions. Therefore, it is essential for healthcare professionals to adopt clear communication strategies tailored to the patient’s level of understanding.

The rise of digital technologies has made health information more accessible; however, not everyone has the necessary skills to navigate the digital world effectively. The digital divide represents the disparity in access to and use of information and communication technologies. This gap can limit some individuals’ ability to obtain accurate and up-to-date health information, negatively affecting their ability to make informed health decisions. Furthermore, a lack of digital skills may prevent effective use of telemedicine tools and other online healthcare resources, exacerbating existing inequalities.

To address challenges related to health literacy and the digital divide, targeted strategies are needed:
Health education: Implementing programs to improve the understanding of health information.
Digital training: Offering courses to develop digital skills, facilitating access to healthcare resources, and promoting critical use of available information.
Accessible communication: Using simple language and visual tools in healthcare communications to ensure information is understandable for all.
Community engagement: Collaborating with local organizations to disseminate health information and provide support, creating a network that fosters healthy behaviors.

Health literacy is a key skill for professionals in the sector, who must be able to convey information clearly and comprehensibly to patients, bridging the gap between scientific knowledge and practical application. The Healthcare Master’s programs at the University of Parma offer advanced training courses that include the development of skills in health communication, therapeutic education, and the use of digital technologies in healthcare.

Through a multidisciplinary approach and innovative teaching methods, these Master’s programs prepare professionals to become agents of change, improving access to care and promoting a more equitable, digital, and inclusive healthcare system.

PROGRAM

INTERNATIONALIZATION AND HEALTHCARE EDUCATION: THE WIDE PROGRAMME AND THE EXPERIENCE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PARMA

The University of Parma continues to stand out in the international landscape of healthcare education thanks to its participation in the WIDE Programme (Workforce Improvement through Development of healthcare Educational programs). As part of this project, a team from the University recently conducted a week of in-person teaching at Sultan Qaboos University in Oman, contributing to the development of innovative educational programs aimed at improving healthcare systems.

As highlighted by Professor Antonio Bonacaro, Associate Professor of Nursing Sciences and head of the program, this experience demonstrates how collaboration between academic institutions and healthcare facilities can lead to significant advancements in educational pathways and, consequently, in the quality of patient care. “The integration of digital technologies in nursing care, combined with a compassionate and competent approach, enhances the role of nurses in responding to the multiple care needs in a professional and human manner,” stated Professor Bonacaro. This message aligns with the vision of the Master’s programs in Healthcare at the University of Parma, which have long promoted an innovative and multidisciplinary approach to healthcare education.

The WIDE Programme experience underscores the importance of advanced healthcare education, capable of integrating best practices on a global scale. This is one of the main objectives of the Master’s programs in Healthcare at the University of Parma, which prepare professionals to tackle the challenges of modern healthcare through a combination of theoretical knowledge, practical experience, and interaction with international experts.

The University of Parma’s involvement in international initiatives reaffirms the importance of high-level education focused on research, practice, and innovation. The Master’s programs in Healthcare fit into this framework as training paths that provide healthcare professionals with concrete tools, contributing to increasingly effective and sustainable healthcare management both nationally and internationally.

PRECISION MEDICINE: THE FUTURE OF HEALTHCARE IS PERSONALIZED

Precision medicine is revolutionizing the healthcare sector, offering personalized treatments based on each patient’s genetic, environmental, and lifestyle characteristics. This innovative approach paves the way for more effective treatments, optimizing clinical outcomes.

Precision medicine leverages advanced technologies to identify the most suitable treatment for each individual. Thanks to these innovations, it is possible to develop targeted therapies, especially in fields such as oncology, cardiology, and rare diseases. According to the article by Chai et al., new genomic sequencing methodologies have enabled the identification of crucial genetic markers for the personalization of oncological therapies. Similarly, Malakar et al. highlight how an in-depth analysis of the patient’s molecular profile is leading to increasingly targeted and effective treatments.

The adoption of precision medicine not only improves the quality of care but also contributes to a more efficient management of healthcare resources, avoiding ineffective treatments and reducing costs for the healthcare system. In Italy, as highlighted in the Italian Journal of Nephrology, this approach is transforming the management of kidney diseases, improving prognosis, and reducing hospitalizations. Likewise, Salvatore’s article underscores the transition from personalized medicine to precision medicine, with a significant impact on the management of chronic patients.

The evolution of the healthcare sector requires professionals capable of interpreting and applying advances in precision medicine, understanding not only the clinical implications but also the ethical, regulatory, and organizational aspects. As discussed in the article by Cavallo Perin et al., the training of healthcare professionals must include cross-disciplinary skills that allow the integration of genomic research into clinical practice. Moreover, a recent analysis published in the Bulletin of the Italian Society of Hospital Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Services of Healthcare Companies highlights the crucial role of hospital pharmacists in implementing therapeutic strategies based on precision medicine.

The Master’s in Healthcare programs at the University of Parma continue to be at the forefront of innovation and healthcare education, helping to train professionals capable of integrating the new frontiers of medicine into patient care pathways.
